Many people do not realize the research done to look at the structure and longevity of flower blooms. Research has extended the longevity of flowers for shipping and for enjoyment.
When preparing to arrange flowers, take the extra time to process the flowers. Plan to pick up the flowers a few days before you arrange them. Make sure all containers used for your flowers are clean. As soon as you receive the flowers, allow the flowers to drink water before you arrange them. Cut the flowers underwater in warm water, place them in containers half filled with water containing floral preservative. Place the flower-filled containers in a bright, warm place. Allow them to drink water for 6 hours or overnight.
I am experimenting with water temperature. After allowing the flowers to drink water, I add cold bottled water to the flower-filled containers. I may add more cold water if I am not arranging the flowers immediately. I am hoping this gives the flowers the impression of being in a cooler. Time will tell!
