Let’s Look At – Chrysanthemums

Examples of chrysanthemum include Ball Mum, Daisy Pom-pom, Spider Mum, and Fuji Daisy Pom-pom. 

Chrysanthemums are hardy blooms with heavy stems. There are many varieties of “mums” that are used in floral creations. Some of these varieties are Ball, Fuji, Spider, and Pom-poms. More varieties of chrysanthemums are available in the fall than in any other season. 

Many do not realize that the heaviness of the stems obstructs the amount of water available to the bloom. To help the flower gain more water, beat the end of the stems to break them. Fill a sink with warm water and add floral preservative. Fill a secondary container with more water. Cut the stems where broken, underwater, and place in the flowers in the container.

Fall is the season that has always been related with mums. “Ball Mums” are traditionally associated with Homecoming Football Games. Pom-poms are small blooms usually in clusters on a single stem. Varieties include daisy, buttons, fuji, cushion, and many others.  These are the most visible variety of mums that are used in flower productions. Mums are very hardy, and last an extremely long time.
