Flower shops have been in Mobile for centuries!
Flowers are so important to Mobile, Alabama! Mobile has ample events where flowers are essential. The earliest Mobile City Business Directory in 1869, listed 5 Flower Shops in the Mobile City Limits. At the time, the city limits were smaller than the current downtown area. In my opinion, that’s a lot of shops!
For this article, I did not look at the population or economic situation of Mobile. I only looked through the Mobile City Business Directories. In 1869, there were 5 flower shops. In 1891 that number grew to 12 flower shops. In 1900, the City Directory listed 10 florists. In 1910, the number of flower shops fell to 5 flower shops. In 1920, the number grew even smaller with only 3 flowers shops listed in the Mobile City Directory.
Let’s looks at the present flower shop market in Mobile. The oldest florist is Zimlich the Florist. The business started as vegetable and flower growers. Floral designs were created by the children of Mr. Zimlich’s large family. The business was sold outside family members in the 1970’s. Descendants of this large family continue floral designs at Elizbeth’s Gardens here in Mobile.
Another ongoing florist in Mobile opened in 1948. Cleveland’s started on Stone Street. Over the years Cleveland had many locations and are currently on Old Shell Road near McGregor. There are many shops in the Mobile area that have been open for over 4o years, this includes Belle Bouquet Florist, LeRoy’s Florist, and Rose Bud Flowers.
This list of flower shops is for businesses that are full service. Meaning, they are open during established business hours. This are a few of the floral artists that create the designs that enhance the scenery of special events.
